Friday Night Fights [Round 1]

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another eye-gouging edition of Friday Night Fights!  The venue may be different but the action remains the same.  Tonight’s featured bout is a classic match up between talented mecha builders who harken back to the rock-’em sock-’em robotic roots of this competition.  Without further preamble, let’s go to the tale of the tape.

Fighting out of the red corner, from the Philippines…its Lu “The Slasher” Sim and his RJ-PLS01A PALASO.

And fighting out of the blue corner, from sunny California, USA…its Guy “The Moderator” Smiley and his Vertical Tank.

As usual, constant reader, you are tasked with deciding the outcome of this pugilistic endeavor and determine who will receive a week’s worth of bragging rights.  Simply leave a comment below and vote for the MOC that best suits your individual taste. I will tally up the votes next Friday and declare a winner before announcing the next bout.

  1. My vote goes to Guy thanks to his underhanded (and awesome) Mega Bloks tactics. The chaotic mix of panels, bits, and bobs all fit together perfectly somehow and those ankles are killer. I also appreciate the inclusion of the drone to give a sense of scale.

  2. I’ll vote with Guy as well. I really dig that flat top, with studs on top and greebly skis all-around. Also — manly arms!

  3. I am impressed by the brick wall-reminiscent build of Guy Smiley’s tank, but the no-nonsense wide-legged “I’m taking over here” stance and look of the Palaso wins my vote. Plus, who can beat that name for a mech?

  4. Palaso all the way. Guy’s will take a while to take down and if he lands a solid punch it’ll pretty much cripple the nimble minx, but one should never count out the little guy. That thing has enough punch in him to whittle away at the knees for a good measure and avoid any direct shots. At that point it’ll be Sugar Ray just pounding away at Ali; he might be bigger, but it still hurts when a little guy lands an uppercut.

  5. Gotta go with the classic tank look of Guy’s contender. Love the grungy finish and solid body. The panel pieces protect all the inner workings. And his sidekick is the perfect distraction for the leggy Palaso. That little guy can walk right up and head butt him in his delicate gunner. ( which is strangely phallic) Down for the count!

  6. For me it’s Palaso all the way. It’s built without any third party parts.
It’s design is clear and clean. AND IT IS STANDING ON MY SHELF 🙂

On the other hand Guy’s tank looks good too. It sources a big portion of it’s attraction from non-LEGO parts and the fantastic sticker work. Both of which are very fitting and well placed.

  7. I vote for Lu Sim’s Mech. The sleak design is more up my alley. Who says that death may not look sexy? Guy’s mech would fit in a Wolfenstein game. Although I like the ‘head’ design the proportions of the extremities and the stance don’t sell it to me.

  8. Not an easy choice here, they’ve both got interesting things going on… I really like the less conventional look and pose of the Palaso, but the color scheme doesn’t work too well for me. So my vote goes to Guy; some fantastic part use going on in there… except for the m(egabl)ockery that is. 🙂

  10. Palaso. I will say though, both are stunning models in their own different ways, definitely not a one sided battle here.

  11. Didn’t realize there was still such an aversion to clone parts. I thought nnenn, Fredo, and DeCastro had changed more minds at this point, but maybe that’s just spacers.

  12. Definitely a nose-to-tail-last furlong here. I really like how both mechs seem to address separate battlefield purposes and are built to suit. However, I think I have to give the wreath to Sim. The small details like ridged hoses framing the canopy and the incredible Bionicle eye in the centre of that laser designator (I assume) on the top…such a simple but effective thing, it is so it is.

  13. I vote Palaso.

Props to Smiley. Your tank looks better, but for me, mixing in non-Lego is a NO GO. Your OUT on an admin issue, not a building issue. I know, the rules aren’t posted anyplace… and further… in life (or building) there are no rules… but I couldn’t vote against you without owning my bias.

Palas carries it despite violating two of my personal pet peeves. A large glass canopy on a surface combat platform, and a main weapon slung really low to the ground (where it will almost always be blocked by terrain and or the platforms legs). Still… rockets topside and great springy legs that suggest agility even in rough terrain.

Palaso Palaso… Advance 300 meters, your ten o clock, and assume over watch. Time now.

  14. After a year of usurping the true king of Westeros, I totally forgot I ca. Vote again!

    Gee Smiling all the way.

Lu’s looks like he can dance all night long but Gee’s has a wicked left hook on that arm.

  15. Hey, Friday night fights is back! Gotta go with the Palaso. A real smooth vs grit match here, and Guy’s gritty industrial feel is spot on, but the polish and color blocking that Lu Sim has in his build can’t be ignored.

  16. +1 for Lu.
I just love me a slick bipedal war machine and every element is beautifully integrated.
