Friday Night Fights [Round 34]

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another Kantosho edition of Friday Night Fights! This week’s bout is the battle of Eternia, with the keys to Castle Grayskull and THE POWER! on the line. Without further preamble, let’s go to the tale of the tape.

Fighting out of the red corner, from a convenience store in Rivendell, it’s “Diamond” Dave Frank and his “GraySkull He-Man“.

And fighting out of the blue corner, from Gladbach Germany, it’s Alex “The Jackhammer” Jones and his “Castle Grayskull“.

As usual, constant reader, you are tasked with deciding the outcome of this pugilistic endeavor and determine who will receive a week’s worth of bragging rights.  Simply leave a comment below and vote for the model that best suits your individual taste. I will tally up the votes next Friday and declare a winner.

Last time, on Friday Night Fights….

It was the battle of the lurker at the threshold, with the souls of children and leftover Chinese takeout on the line.  In the end, “cantankerous” Cab ~ and his “What Crawls at Night“ scored a punishing 12-4 victory over “ShotgunSheo. and his “Monster”.  Cab scores his first victory (1-0) while Sheo runs his record to (0-1).

  1. The comparison of these two is bringing me some major deja vu. I probably witnessed a “street fight” between these two in the comments section of some long lost forum. I doubt their differences were ever settled in the ring, so let’s make it official.

For me, Dave’s rendition is closer on the face. It has the bigger side fangs, and better eye sockets. Alex has the better detailing on the rest, and his gets the skullcap helm on top just right. His also gives the better angled shot to show that it’s not just a facade.

It’s still tough, like having to choose between the “Munsters” and the “Addams Family” when you just wish you could combine the best of both…

Guess I’ll just vote against what bugs me the most, and that’s the dental work on Pax’s… I chose Dave.

  2. For me, this one is a slam dunk for Dave. His skull face is so much better than Alex’s that any other differences on the castle details are irrelevant. Dave got the shape of the eye sockets right. Alex had some nice parts usage there, but it ended up making the eye sockets too round. Dave’s fangs look better to me, too, especially with the use of those 2×2 curved slopes. But the thing that really seals the deal for me are the gaps that Alex introduced when he tilted those cheekbone sections. Even though he may have been able to match the cheekbone angles better that way, the gaps are so distracting that they really take away from the skull as a whole.

Given the variety of opinions on this one already, it looks like another very well-chosen bout, one that is likely to go to a split decision.

  3. Heh. it seems we’re all voting based on the skull; although I find Dave’s version horrible; the stairway eyes and ultra wide mouth don’t work for me at all. The nose hole is too big as well. Not too fond of the gaps on Alex’s either, but the angles look great and the whole thing’s more accurate.

    1. Have to agree on the width of the mouth. I hadn’t fully appreciated that detail before, but I still consider it a minor defect compared to some of the other things I noticed on Alex’s build. I almost see the jaggedness in Dave’s eye sockets as a plus — the thing is supposed to be built from stones and bricks, right?

      1. I always saw the skull as a sculpture, rather than a pile of rocks thrown together to form a skull shape. It clashes too much with the rest of the curvy bits.

  4. I vote Jones.

Both are excellent. And, I was almost seduced by the shirtless barbarian wielding the sword on the top model… I mean… check the abs… and the sword, yeah, a seemingly insignificant little detail… but it really was THE exact, best sword for He-Man!

But the interior features of the second model slay me! Such playability! Such interior detail-ish-ness…

Again, excellent choice tonight Keith. I thought last weeks choice was difficult! Two monsters behind two closet doors? And now with the duel Gray Skulls…. All this apples to apples is getting painful though. About time to hit us with an Apples to Oranges choice I think.

  5. I feel like the deck has been stacked against Dave here. His Grayskull only got one head-on shot while Alex gets a collage showing that it opens up and has an interior. We have to do our homework this week to find out that Dave’s Grayskull also has these features.

That being said, I can’t get past the middle tooth on Alex’s. Even if it is somewhat mimicking the play set it is based on, I can’t get past it. And I prefer the shaping of Dave’s a little more, especially when you compare only the head-on shots. My vote goes to Dave.

  6. I think I’m gonna have to throw accuracy out the window here. Alex’s teeth are way off and Dave’s are too pronounced and the cheek bones are too underdeveloped to balance them out, making the whole thing look more like an ape or early hominid skull. Ignoring those issues and not having watched the show, I prefer the more vicious look of Alex’s over Dave’s more comic style and Alex gets bonus points for better details like the window and flag. So it’s blue corner for me this week.

  7. Wow, I would love to own Jones’ as a set. But I like the face of Dave’s better, and I’m also entertained by imagining a cruel end to that poor sword-looter. I didn’t imagine either to be the face of a human. I feel like the top is the face of a creature of some form, possibly the castle itself. I vote Dave.

  8. I love this round; when I saw the match-up I was not only 100% sure Alex will win, I could have probably been persuaded to bet this is the round where someone will have a flawless victory. How wrong I was.
