Friday Night Fights [Round 36]

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another flying guillotine edition of Friday Night Fights! This week’s bout is the battle of the monkey shine, with access to a crate full of bananas and control of the jungle canopy on the line. Without further preamble, let’s go to the tale of the tape.

Fighting out of the red corner, from darkest France, it’s “PoignarderPistash and his “The three wise monkeys”.

And fighting out of the blue corner, also from darkest France, it’s Jimmy “FendoirFortel and his “Three wise monkeys“.

As usual, constant reader, you are tasked with deciding the outcome of this pugilistic endeavor and determine who will receive a week’s worth of bragging rights.  Simply leave a comment below and vote for the model that best suits your individual taste. I will tally up the votes next Friday and declare a winner.

Last time, on Friday Night Fights….

It was the battle of Territory EA27, with access to SZ18 and control of the continent on the line.  In the end, LukeClarenceVan“The Revanchist” and his “Blast Off!” scored a narrow 6-5 victory over Pistol Pico van Grootveld and his “Cabo Agave“.  LCVTR scores his first victory (1-0) while Pico runs his record to (0-1).

  1. There’s a lot I like better about Fortel’s. The only thing I prefer on Pistash’s model is the fingers. Both have great poses and expressions, but Fortel definitely wins it for me.

  2. Monsieur Fortel gets my vote. Techniques are equally ok, but Fortel’s has more expression.
The one that gets me is the third monkey: position of the arms is more like a giggly monkey.

  3. Fortel as well. The emotions through with the facial expressions and arm positioning. The pistash “hear no” monkey looks more like it’s raising its hands in exasperation than covering the ears.

  4. Yeah I’m gonna go Fortel too. Cuter, more cartoony, grasping at things no one else has said yet.

Linguistic context! This saying is a pun on the Japanese word for monkey, which sounds the same as the word you would use to negate a verb in old Japanese. So the writing in Pistash’s says “Don’t see, don’t hear, don’t speak,” but the “don’t” part uses the character for monkey.

      1. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension. 1984 classic directed by W. D. Richter, starring Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Clancy Brown, Ellen Barkin, and everyone who was everyone on the costarring bandwagon in the 80s. Totally insane, absolutely over the top, completely original, fucking awesome movie! Seriously, check it out. The effects are understandably rough, but they are actually still really good. Great story. Hilarious dialogue. Pure genius. Very, VERY high on my all time favorite movie list.

      2. Hey do you recognize the other guy in that clip? It’s Mike from Breaking Bad… but more importantly, it’s Victor Maitlands goon from Beverly Hills Cop!

        “Its a thermo pod… but it’s not a very good design…”

  5. Fortel. I think part of the charm is the Paul Frank-esque proportions and the mouth choice, which one may typically associate with monkeys. Pistash’s may more realistic, but they look like they’re grimacing. They remind me of the Planet of the Apes, which was on my mind before Keith put the Simpson’s clip up.
